The Wauzeka-Steuben girls basketball team had a busy week last week. The Hornets played four games in five days, with the last three of those games coming on the road.
The Hornets began the week by hosting Viroqua last Monday, Jan. 12 and the host Hornets came away with a 67-47 win over a Viroqua Blackhawks team currently tied for first place in the Coulee Conference. The Blackhawks would also go on to snap West Salem’s 44-game Coulee Conference winning streak the very next night.
Wauzeka-Steuben had a very balanced scoring attack in the win, with seven different players scoring in the game, including three in double figures. Leading the way was Macy Mitchell with 17 points. She was followed by Natalie Wright with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Hayley Mitchell with 11 points and six rebounds. Also scoring in the game for W-S was Claire Wright (nine points), Abby Wright with eight points, Isabella Bunders with six points (and seven rebounds and eight assists) and Violet Mitchell with three points.
Wauzeka-Steuben was back on the road the following night, traveling to Soldiers Grove to face the North Crawford Trojans. It was all Hornets from the opening tip as they defeated the Trojans 73-27. Once again, Wauzeka-Steuben’s offense again was hitting on all cylinders as eight different players scored in the win, with three of those players reaching double figures.
Leading the way for the Hornets in scoring and rebounding was Abby Wright, who had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. She was followed in scoring by Bunders with 15 points and Natalie Wright, who also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Hayley and Macy Mitchell both added nine points each, while Claire Wright (seven points), Violet Mitchel (three points) and Brynnlee Benoy (two points) rounded out the scoring tally.
The Hornets traveled to La Farge last Thursday, Jan. 15 and came away with a 66-33 victory. Stats from this game were unavailable as of press time.
Finally, Wauzeka-Steuben wrapped up the week by traveling to Albany this past Saturday to face the Albany/Monticello Comets in a potential postseason matchup preview between two teams that had a combined record of 25-2 going into the game. The Comets came out of the showdown on top as they defeated Wauzeka-Steuben 61-40 to snap the Hornets’ 11-game win streak.
Stats from this game were also unavailable as of press time. Albany/Monticello improved their record to 14-1 with the win, while Wauzeka-Steuben fell to 12-2 overall.
The Hornets schedule is quite a bit lighter this week than last week. Following this past Tuesday night’s game at Boscobel, the Hornets hit the hardwood only once more during this week when they host De Soto this Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.
