The Wauzeka-Steuben girls basketball team opened up 2026 this past Friday, Jan. 2 when they made the trek to Ontario in northeastern Vernon Country to take on the Brookwood Falcons in non-conference hoops action.
Following a 13-day layoff, rust appeared to a factor for the Wauzeka-Steuben in the first half as the host Falcons took a 28-24 lead over the Hornets into halftime.
The second half also appeared to be in the Falcons favor as the hosts held a 38-33 lead with 9:06 remaining in regulation.
The Hornets had other plans though as they turned on the offensive jets and outscored Brookwood 20-6 in the final nine minutes of the the game to earn a 53-44 victory.
Stats were not available as of press time as the Hornets moved their record to 6-1 on the season with the win, while the Falcons dropped to 7-4 overall.
W-S began a busy week this past Monday night with a road game at Riverdale. The Hornets are at Seneca this Thursday night before hosting Richland Center the following night to conclude the week.
