For a second consecutive week, the Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Bluegolds were tasked with facing another top five ranked team in D7 when they welcomed second ranked Potosi/Cassville to Wauzeka last Friday, Oct. 3.
The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter as the period ended tied 7-7. The second quarter featured more of the same (minus the extra point conversions) as the two teams entered halftime tied 13-13. The third quarter featured yet another pair of touchdowns as the game went into the fourth quarter tied 19-19.
The visiting Chieftains however, managed to score two fourth quarter touchdowns while limiting the Bluegolds to just one final score as Potosi/Cassville extended their Six Rivers Conference winning streak to 18 games with the 33-27 victory. The Chieftains improved to 7-0 overall with the win, while the Bluegolds fell to 5-2.
S-W-S quarterback Cooper Lomas was 5-for-12 passing for 81 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, while also adding 21 yards rushing on five carries.
Senior Hunter Hagensick ran five times for 61 yards and one touchdown and caught one pass for 40 yards and one touchdown. Fellow senior Gage Wall caught two passes for 26 yards and one touchdown and also had an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown in the loss. Senior running back Carson Sime carried the ball 20 times for 93 yards and caught one pass for two yards. Jackson Konichek added one reception for 13 yards and had a successful two-point conversion attempt to round out the Bluegolds offense.
Wall led the defense with 9.0 tackles, while Sime (8.5), Hagensick (8.0) and Sawyer Swiggum (7.5) each had seven plus tackles in the loss. Dakota Owens collected the Bluegold defense’ only quarterback sack during the game. Unfortunately for S-W-S, Potosi/Cassville running back River Sahr was one man wrecking crew as he ran 26 times for 259 yards and five touchdowns for the visitors. Fellow running back Hunter White added 126 yards rushing on 19 attempts.
The Bluegolds hit the road this week when they travel to Patch Grove to take on River Ridge. The Timberwolves are fighting for a postseason spot at 3-4 overall after falling at Iowa-Grant 34-30 this past Friday night. The Timberwolves’ four losses are by a combined total of 21 points.
