Hornets win at Southwestern, fall at home to Lancaster

The Wauzeka-Steuben Girls Basketball team began its 2025–26 season last Tuesday, Nov. 20 with a non-conference trip to Hazel Green to take on the Southwestern Wildcats. The Hornets jumped out to a 34-12 lead at halftime before out-scoring the hosts 29-14 in the second half to earn a 63-26 win in the season opener.

The Hornets had four players reach double figures in scoring with seniors Macy Mitchell and Natalie Wright leading the way with 13 points each. They were followed by sophomore Hayley Mitchell with 12 points and senior Isabella Bunders with 10 points each. Bunders also led the team in rebounds with 10. Also adding to the scoring tally for Wauzeka-Steuben was junior Claire Wright (six points), junior Violet Mitchell (four points), ninth-grader Abby Wright (three points) and junior Brynnlee Benoy (two points).

The Hornets were back on the court two nights later when they hosted Lancaster. The visitors jumped out to a 24-16 lead at halftime before holding on to hand the Hornets a 51-39 defeat. 

Wauzeka-Steuben was led in both scoring and rebounding by M. Mitchell with 10 points and eight rebounds. N. Wright added eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. Rounding out the Hornets scoring totals were Bunders (six points), A. Wright (five points), H. Mitchell and V. Mitchell (four points each) and C. Wright (two points). The Hornets dropped to 1-1 with the loss while the Flying Arrows improved to 2-0.

Wauzeka-Steuben is next in action on Friday, Dec. 5 when they begin conference play by hosting the North Crawford Trojans with tip-off scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
