Hornets pickup wins at Kickapoo, PdC

Looking to extend their winning streak, the Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets girls basketball team traveled to Kickapoo last Thursday, Feb. 5 to face the host Panthers.

The Hornets jumped out to a 30-15 halftime lead before outscoring Kickapoo 24-19 in the second half to claim the 54-34 victory. W-S  improved to 8-1 in the Ridge & Valley Conference with the win.

Three players reached double figures in scoring for the Hornets, led by senior Isabella Bunders with 19 points (as tell as a team-high nine rebounds). She was followed by Macy and Hayley Mitchell with 11 points each. Rounding out the scoring total for the Hornets was Natalie Wright (eight points), Abby Wright (three points) and Brynnlee Benoy (two points).

The Hornets made the short drive west on Highway 60 two nights later to take on Prairie du Chien in the first ever varsity girls basketball game between the two programs.

The Hornets took an early double-digit lead on the Hawks, but PdC kept clawing back in the first half as the Hornets held a 26-17 lead at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Hornets, as they outscored the Hawks 35-19 en route to earning a 61-36 win over Prairie du Chien.

The Hornets offense was led by a pair of 16 point performances by seniors Macy Mitchell and Natalie Wright. Also reaching double figures in scoring for W-S was Abby Wright with 11 points (while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds). Bunders (seven points), H. Mitchell (five points), Violet Mitchell (four points) and Stella Walz (two points) rounded out the Hornets scoring totals.

Wauzeka-Steuben improved thier overall record to 17-3 overall on the season with the victory while PdC fell to 3-15 overall.

The Hornets entered this week with a pair of key conference games as they look to catch the De Soto Pirates in the race for the conference championship.

First up for the Hornets was a home game this past Tuesday night against a Seneca team having won four of their last six games.

The Hornets’ week concludes this Friday night when they travel to De Soto looking to force a tie at the top of the Ridge & Valley Conference standings, while the Pirates look to keep the conference championship to themselves.
