Coming off a 19-point loss to Albany/Monticello the previous Saturday that snapped their 11-game winning streak, the Wauzeka-Steuben girls basketball team looked to get back on the winning page when they made the short trip east to Boscobel last Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The visiting Hornets accomplished their goal with a 60-42 non-conference win over the Bulldogs.

Senior Macy Mitchell was one of three Hornet players to score in double figures when she led the team with 18 points, while also grabbing six rebounds. Fellow senior Isabella Bunders added 14 points and six rebounds, while ninth-grader Abby Wright chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds in the win.

The Hornets also got scoring contributions from sophomore Hayley Mitchell (nine points and five rebounds)  and senior Natalie Wright (eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds).

Wauzeka-Steuben returned to their home court two nights later to host the De Soto Pirates in a showdown between the last two teams undefeated in Ridge & Valley Conference play.

After falling behind by double digits early in the second half, the Hornets rallied to get within two several times in the final minutes of the game but were unable to take the lead as the Pirates held off the Hornets 58-54.

Final stats for the Hornets were unavailable for this game was of press time.

Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the Ridge & Valley Conference with the loss, while the win moved De Soto to 10-5 overall and 7-0 in conference play.

The Hornets kicked off this week’s schedule by hosting Weston/Ithaca this past Tuesday night before traveling to Cassville this Friday night to face the Potosi/Cassville co-op at 7:30 p.m.
