Playing in their first game in 12 days, the Seneca Royals girls basketball team hosted rival Wauzeka-Steuben last Thursday, Jan. 8 looking to shake off any rust and make some noise in the Ridge & Valley Conference. A low scoring first half saw the Hornets take a 21-12 lead into halftime. It was a similar story in the second half as the Hornets outscored the Royals 22-14 en route to a 43-26 victory.
Senior Dhyllan Kemp scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds during the game to lead the Royals in both categories. Sophomore Grace Varo added seven points, four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Seneca’s offense also got three points each from junior Emma Manning and sophomore Lily Payne and two points each from seniors Camryn Lenzendorf and Aylah Baker. Stats for Wauzeka-Steuben were not available as of press time.
The Hornets improved their overall record to 8-1 and 4-0 in the Ridge & Valley Conference with the win, while Seneca fell to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Royals returned to the court this past Monday night, Jan. 12 when they traveled to Wonewoc-Center before returning home this Friday, Jan. 16 to host the newly formed Weston/Ithaca co-op starting at 6:00 p.m.
