Playing three conference games in a span of four days left the River Ridge boys’ basketball team with a Six Rivers conference record of 4-2 and an overall record of 7-4, having beaten Highland and Black Hawk, while losing to Belmont.
The Timberwolves began last week’s schedule with an 88-46 victory over host Highland, where coach Dan Moris’ squad was cooking with fish grease, shooting 70 percent from the field, including 55 percent from 3-point range and averaging a whopping 1.28 points per possession. From 2-point range, River Ridge made 25-of-39 (64 percent) shot attempts, and from 3-point range were 11-of-20 (55 percent). They were however less efficient at the free throw line where they were 5-of-10 (50 percent).
The Timberwolves had things going from the start and after one half of play held a 38-27 advantage, then increased their lead in the second half, where they outscored the Cardinals 50-19.
With four players scoring in double figures, Brandon Davis led the pack with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown. Davis also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, dished out a team-high six assists and came up with a team-high three steals.
Finishing with 15 points was sophomore Lane Copsey, who was 6-of-9 from the field, while senior Reese Drew went 5-of-7 to score 12 points and junior Jackson White 5-of-8 to add 10 points. In total, nine different players scored five or more points in the T-Wolves’ 42-point victory.
On the following Thursday night, Moris and his Timberwolves hosted the seventh ranked Belmont Braves, who currently sit 5-1 in league play and 10-1 overall.
The host Timberwolves had a spectacular first half against the Braves, taking a 41-30 lead into the locker room at intermission. Belmont then flipped the script in the second half though, where they outscored the home team 38-19 to claim a 68-60 victory.
The Timberwolves, who made 26-of-55 (45.6 percent) shot attempts from the field, including 6-of-22 (27 percent) from 3-point range, averaged 0.91 points per possession compared to 1.13 for Belmont.
Davis led River Ridge with 18 points on 8-of-20 shot attempts, followed by Brock Bunge with 15 points and Reese Drew nine. Drew and Noah Copsey each pulled down six rebounds, while Copsey also dished out a team-high five assists.
It didn’t take long for the Timberwolves to rebound from Thursday night’s loss, as they traveled to South Wayne and picked up a 59-26 victory over host Black Hawk the following night.
The Timberwolves outscored the Warriors 32-12 in the paint and converted 23 Black Hawk turnovers into 20 points, while also turning 16 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points.
With three players scoring in double figures, Davis led River Ridge with 18 points, followed by Noah Copsey with 12 and Lane Copsey 11. Noah Copsey also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while Bunge and Drew each dished out four assists in the win.
Following this past Tuesday night’s non-conference contest against De Soto, the Timberwolves will travel to Potosi Thursday night to take on league-leading Potosi/Cassville (5-0, 5-4).
