Needing to finish among the top two in their respective weight class, no wrestlers from River Ridge advanced to the WIAA State Meet after competing at last Saturday’s division 3 Brookwood Sectional.

Coach Brad Lange’s squad concluded the sectional meet in 14th place with 33 team points, while Aquinas took the team title with 271 points, followed by Iowa-Grant/Highland (209) and Lancaster (197).

The team’s top finisher was junior Braden Skaife, who placed fourth in the 190-pound weight class. Skaife went 2-2 on the day to score a team-high 13 points, and concluded the season with a record of 26-17 with 20 pins to his credit.

On Saturday, Skaife followed up a first-round bye with a loss in the quarterfinals, sending him into the consolation bracket. There he won back-to-back matches by pin, to fight his way into the third-place match. Wrestling for third place, Skaife suffered a pin in 1:40 to Trenton Frye of Royall/Wonewoc-Center.

Bringing home sixth-place finishes were 132-pound senior Cam Wehrle and 157-pound junior Cael Koenig, Koenig going 2-3 on the day to score 10 points and Wehrle going 1-3 to score five points.

Koenig concluded his junior season with a record of 30-21 with 21 pins to his credit, while Wehrle finished his senior season with a record of 12-32 with eight pins.

Finishing eighth in the 120-pound weight class was freshman Axel Morrow, who had a season record of 7-32, while fellow freshman Luke Wehrle did not place in the 150-pound bracket and concluded his season with a record of 12-34, and junior Emery Simerson did not place in the 175-pound bracket, concluding his season with a record of 19-23.
