The Prairie du Chien Boys Wrestling team traveled to Richland Center High School this past Friday, Jan. 9 looking to extend their conference championship streak to seven while keeping their SWC dual winning streak alive after entering the night having won their last 30 consecutive SWC dual matches dating back to January 2019.
Unfortunately for the Hawks it would not take long for both streaks to come to an end as a strong Belmont/Platteville team held off the Hawks 39-36 in the first dual of the night for both teams. It was Belmont/Platteville’s first dual win over the Hawks since earning a 45-28 win at Prairie du Chien High School on January 13, 2006.
Prairie du Chien was without a pair of starters, including one because of a medical issue and were forced to forfeit at 157 and 215 pounds the entire night.
The Hawks rebounded to defeat Richland Center 60-18 and River Valley 53-27 in the second and third duals before their attention turned to undefeated Lancaster as the Hawks looked to stay in the hunt for at least a share of the conference title with a win.
It was yet another close, hard fought dual but it was the Arrows winning 39-35 to give the Hawks their second loss of the night. Lancaster and Belmont/Platteville would go onto wrestle to a 42-42 tie in the final round of the night with the Flying Arrows winning 43-42 on criteria to claim the SWC Championship outright.
The fifth and final dual pitted the Hawks against Dodgeville with PdC defeating the Dodgers 44-36 to place third in the SWC for the 2025-26 season.
Leading the Hawk wrestlers with 5-0 records on the night was sophomore Keaton Achenbach (106), junior Hunter Reid (120/126) and senior Jack Simmons (285). Finishing the meet with 4-1 records was freshman Tyson Fernette (113), junior Brylee Brewer (138) and sophomore Jake Kramer (165/175). Freshman Gage Hrubes finished the night 3-1 at 126 pounds.
Every PdC wrestler that took the mat on the night picked up at least one win including sophomore Linus Wechsel (1-0 at 120), sophomore Landon Thiry (1-3 at 132), senior Porter Kossman (3-2 at 144), junior Brady Baumgartner (3-2 at 150/157), freshman Cooper Simmons (2-2 at 165/175) and freshman Payton Beinborn (2-3 at 190).
The Hawks will look to take out some aggression on this mat this week at a pair of meets. PdC will travel to Muscoda tomorrow night for a triangular with Riverdale and Mineral Point that starts at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to Melrose-Mindoro High School on Friday afternoon for a quad meet with G-E-T/Mel-Min, Menomonie and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln starting at 4:30 p.m.
